Get to know Steve Burton
Hello, my name is Steve Burton and I am your newest SCI-Lansing Board Member. I became a member in 2019 just before my retirement. I’ve always had a passion for hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, ORVs, and just about everything else outdoor-related. I was asked to join the SCI Board last year and jumped at the chance to help protect our outdoor heritage.
I have hunted and fished extensively in North America and ventured as far as Scotland, New Zealand, the Caribbean, and Mexico for adventures. I enjoy talking about hunting and fishing and the challenges we face today. I look forward to serving the members of SCI in the Lansing Chapter and hope to meet you at one of our events.
SCI: What year did you join SCI?
Steve: 2019
SCI: What single word comes to mind regarding SCI?
Steve: Hunting rights for our future generations.
SCI: What single word comes to mind regarding the Lansing Chapter of SCI?
Steve: Dedicated.
SCI: What type of hunting/fishing do you do on a regular basis?
Steve: I enjoy hunting for whitetail and mule deer, elk, bear, moose, and small game. I have traveled the world hunting various species, always looking for my next adventure. My first out-of-state hunt was for upland birds and waterfowl in North Dakota about 25 years ago. I haven’t stopped traveling to hunt and fish since.
SCI: We all have favorites, what is your favorite rifle?
Steve: Christensen Arms .300 Win Mag. My go-to large game cartridge.
SCI: What is your favorite shotgun?
Steve: I have shot a Benelli SBE II or III my entire adult life. 12 gauge. Love that gun. Sporting clays, trap, skeet, upland, small game, turkey, and waterfowl. This gun does it all. I have also shot a PSE bow in the last 25 years (different models).
SCI: What are some of your hunting destinations?
Steve: I’ve hunted in Canada (BC, SK, ON, AB), Scotland, and in the US in AK, MT, WY, ND, IN, SD, AR, NM, CO, and of course Michigan.
SCI: What are some of your Fishing Destinations?
Steve: New Zealand, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, and across the US.
SCI: What advice do you or would you give to someone new to hunting?
Steve: Find a mentor. It can be overwhelming at first. If you can’t find one, join a shooting club, an advocacy group like SCI, or a local sportsmen club. Ask the group about mentorship opportunities within their organizations. Most members will be very helpful in getting started.
Thanks, Steve. It was great catching up with you. We look forward to the next year!
