What is the American Wilderness Leadership School?

The American Wilderness Leadership SchoolThe American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS) in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a school (primarily for teachers, there is also one session available for students) run by The Safari Club International Foundation that offers hands-on training and lessons focused around the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.  Participants are provided engaging take home lessons on conservation education that can be integrated into K-12 math, science, language arts, social studies, and physical education.

Every year, the Lansing Area Chapter of Safari Club International (SCI) sponsors teachers to participate in AWLS. Here is a story from 5th grade teacher, Angela St. Amant, whose attendance was sponsored by the Lansing SCI Chapter.

Lansing Area Teacher Attends The American Wilderness Leadership School

My name is Angela St. Amant and I am a 5th grade teacher at Dansville Elementary, in Dansville, Michigan. I teach Science to all of the 5th graders in my building and I am the director for our 5th grade camp program.

This summer I was ecstatic to be able to attend AWLS through your generous sponsorship. Just from the description, I knew
I would be able to apply things I learned from the experience directly to my classroom and my camp program.

This is me in Granite Creek! We also have water ecology classes at 5th grade grade camp. Perfect!

The American Wilderness Leadership SchoolI cannot thank you and your organization enough for allowing me this opportunity.

This is me shooting a shotgun for the first time, ever. I hit my first three clay pigeons in a row! I will definitely try this again!

I will carry the following experiences with me forever:

  • hands on learning opportunities
  • the certifications
  • field trips
  • fascinating lectures
  • classroom opportunities

Besides all of the learning that happened over the eight days, I was also fortunate to develop friendships and connections that have benefited me personally and professionally.

As I stated above, I am the director for our 5th grade camp program. I am fortunate enough to be able to take my students on a five day, outdoor adventure every fall. Most everything in the AWLS program was something I could use to bolster the experience and learning for my students.

Again, I cannot thank you enough for this experience.

Sincerely,

Angela St. Amant
